Italy: a perfect mother-daughter vacation!

Embarking on a trip to Italy with my daughter was an incredible experience filled with  beautiful sights and wonderful food and wine. We actually went on a guided vacation with Globus and here are some of our favorite highlights:

1. **Food Tour in Rome's Trastevere Neighborhood:** We loved wandering through the streets of Trastevere, trying out different Italian foods like pizza and gelato. It was a delicious way to dive into the local culture.

2. **Pasta Making Class in Rome:** Taking a pasta making class was a blast. We got our hands dirty and learned how to make spaghetti from scratch. It was messy but so much fun, and the pasta tasted amazing!

3. **Riding in an Open Taxi around Capri:** Exploring Capri in an open taxi was breathtaking. The views of the coastline were stunning, and feeling the wind in our hair made it even more special.

4. **Visiting the Island of Burano from Venice:** Burano was like stepping into a postcard with its colorful houses and canals. We enjoyed walking around, admiring the lace-making shops, and taking in the charming atmosphere.

5. **Exploring Santa Croce in Florence:** Santa Croce was awe-inspiring. It was incredible to see the final resting place of famous figures like Michelangelo. The basilica was stunning, and we felt a sense of reverence being there.

Having traveled to Europe multiple times over the years, here are a few things to know when planning a trip to Italy.
  • Have mobility issues? While Italy's historic streets will present some obstacles, think of it as an opportunity to explore at a slower pace, discovering hidden gems you might have missed otherwise. But plan ahead: public restrooms are often down two flights of stairs, and not all buildings have elevators. With lots of stairs, small chairs, and crowded areas posing challenges, remember that the charm of cobblestone streets adds to the authentic Italian experience.

  • Taking a taxi? Taxis drivers will tell you have to pay in cash but it is a law that they have to accept credit cards. If they request cash you can tell them you will report them to the financial police (yes they do have that) and you will probably see the credit card machine appear!
  • Need a bathroom in a public area? Make sure to have a Euro coin or a 50 cent Euro coin handy. While some bathrooms have attendants who can provide change, most operate on coin-fed turnstiles. Just a heads-up: the toilet paper in Italy is often more like crepe paper. I always carry a small package of tissues in my day bag.
  • Hotel room expectations.. Don't expect washcloths, as they're not typically provided. While soap and shampoo are usually available, conditioner is never included. Body lotion and other personal care items are also rare finds. Be cautious: most tubs are very high, so if you have difficulty getting in, request a walk-in shower. Additionally, hand railings are often absent, so consider this when booking. If you use a CPAP machine, request electrical plugs by the bed. And don't forget to pack outlet adapters.

Concerned about air conditioning? The Italian government dictates when heating and air conditioning can be used. Heating is typically turned off on April 15th and back on by October 15th. Air conditioning starts in early June and ends in mid-September. While most hotel windows can be opened, be aware that screens are not commonly provided.

  • When dining out in Italy, be prepared to purchase water, whether still or sparkling. Waiters generally anticipate a 10% tip. Restaurants typically close after lunch and reopen around 7 pm for dinner, as Italians dine late. Pasta often kicks off the meal as the first course, and wine is both affordable and delightful! Most shops and cafes don't open before 9 am.
  • Additionally, "bar" doesn't necessarily mean a place solely for alcohol; they're also community spots offering coffee, gelato, snacks, or alcoholic drinks. Just a heads-up: if you order coffee or gelato and sit down to enjoy it, expect a service fee. Italians traditionally drink their coffee standing at counters. Also, you pay for your coffee or gelato in advance and present your receipt to receive your order.

.

And finally, embrace the adventure of group travel! Early mornings and lots of walking mean more time to soak in Italy's breathtaking sights and sounds.Ready to go? I hope you still want to travel to Italy! It is an amazing place with such rich history and architecture. You will not be disappointed!
Our trip to Italy was filled with these unforgettable moments, making it a journey we'll always cherish. It was a fantastic way to bond and create memories that will last a lifetime.
